Abstract

The symposium seeks to promote discussions about ecology as a science in another perspective, supporting sustainable agroecosystems, as well as, as a science of interdisciplinary approach, man and environment interactions, agriculture and nature, science and technology, economy and society, and environmental impacts. Its main objective is to discuss basic fundamentals of ecology for the management of (agro)ecosystems and to relate the concepts and principles of ecology with the production activity in agroecosystems in the Amazon. The symposium is structured in the form of small presentations (approximately 10 min. each), followed by discussion. The presentations will be listed: I- the challenges of designing and managing sustainable agroecosystems in the Amazon; II- agroecosystem as a way of maintaining the socioeconomic and cultural vitality of smallholders and/or traditional peoples; and III- the possible environmental impacts of (agro)ecosystems. The fragmentation of native habitats certainly results in the loss of important natural habitats for the conservation of biodiversity. However, the occupation of the landscape by agroecosystems does not necessarily transform it into a completely inhospitable environment for all native species, on the other hand, conventional agriculture can generate numerous negative impacts on biodiversity. After the presentations, the symposium will be open for discussion among participants.
