Companhia das Lezírias is famous for the tradition and quality of its products and ser-vices, which have been provided here since the 19th century.
Created in 1836, the Companhia das Lezírias is situated between the Tagus and Sorraia rivers. It is one of the largest agricultural and ?“montado?” enterprises in Portugal, covering an area that comprises the Lezíria de Vila Franca de Xira, Charneca do Infantado, Cata-pereiro, Paul de Belmonte and Paul das Lavouras. Montado is a characteristic man-madelandscape, with cork oak trees intercropped with grazed areas. It is one of our LTER (Long Term Ecological Research) sites. In Portugal, the montado is an important agro-forestry ecosystem, occupying vast areas on schistic and granitic soils, south of the river Tejo. Cork-oak stands, mainly found in the Atlantic- influenced western areas, are pre-served by law, since the tree was selected as the emblematic Portuguese species. Quer-cus suber, the primary source of industrial cork, is one of the most important woody spe-cies occurring in Portugal. It is drought resistant and it can grow on very poor soils, due to its structural and physiological xerophytic adaptations.
Companhia das Lezírias is also well known for the breeding of the Lusitano thorough-bred horse.
